Introduction

The coming of the rains heralds “change”. The African Pitta arrives in the Zambezi valley to breed. Migrants abound in the bush and hundreds of migrants flock to feed on the new bounty that the rains bring in. Come with us in search of one Africa’s most elusive bird species the African Pitta, we will journey to the Zambezi valley to try to locate it at the start of its breeding season.

Luckily for us the Chaplin’s (Zambian) Barbet is sedentary and we will search for Zambia’s endemic Chaplin’s Barbet in Nkanga Conservation Area.

The African Pitta’s are intra-African migrants and they migrate to the Zambezi valley each year between late Nov and early April to breed. One can only really locate the Pitta’s at the start of the rainy season when they begin their breeding cycle.

This tour is tailored towards photographers who are keen on bird photography and passionate about birding in general. Photographers can be from a beginner level to advanced DSLR users. We will search for the Pitta in its breeding location, and spend quite a bit of time specifically focussing on attempting to photograph this rare and special bird.

We will also spend time photographing and viewing other birds while we are travelling to and from sites and in and around the lodges.

We will dedicate 3 mornings and afternoons to try and photograph the elusive African pitta in the Zambezi Valley.

We will spend 3 nights at Masuku Lodge which is located 2.5 hours North of Livingstone in the heart of the Nkanga Conservation Area, this is one of Zambia’s IBA’s and is the home of Zambia’s only true endemic bird species the Chaplin’s Barbet as well as approximately 440 other bird species including Miombo specials.

We will spend a full morning and afternoon birding in the conservancy.

After our final night at Masuku Lodge we will transfer you back to Livingstone International Airport for your return flight home. Alternatively if you wish to spend some time in Livingstone to visit Victoria Falls and spend time on the Zambezi River we can happily create an add-on package to suite your requirements.
