The take of a tiger is nothing short of explosive, and, when hooked, they are cunning, dogged, acrobatic fighters that frequently leave fishermen with a snapped line and trembling knees.

Barotseland is located in Western Zambia and one of the largest flood plains on the Zambezi river system  and the home of the Lozi people, this area is also known to many as “Tiger Country”. The Tigerfish here grow to an impressive size with many  +20lb fish being caught here each year.

This tour is five nights giving you 4 full days of serious fishing in some of the best Tiger country on the planet. You will meet up at Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg where you will board a charter flight with a group of keen Tiger fishermen. You will fly to Lukulu Town via Livingstone and be met by the team from Matoya Lodge and this is where your exciting fishing tour will begin.

During the rainy season, the Zambezi breaks its banks and forms a significantly large floodplain which spans accross the Barotse floodplain approximately 50km  in its widest sections. The Barotse Floodplain is known to be one of Africa’s greatest wetlands and provides a thriving ecosystem for all aquatic life to survive.  The flood waters leave behind a rich layer of sediment on top of the Kalahari sands  which creates nutrient rich topsoil for grasses and plants to thrive on.

From November to January, the flooding makes it  too difficult to fish this section of the Zambezi River as the fish have all dispersed from the main channels into the flood plains. Between May to July the waters slowly start spilling back into the main channel, fishing can be very good for Tigers during this time. The best and most consistent period to fish for Tiger and Bream species is between August and October when the waters have receded back into the main channels and warmed up.
